Free-time activities
A R T  &  E X H I B I T I O N S
Exhibition to celebrate 100 years since the opening of the historic 
Transalpina railway line is open until 31 December in the railway 
museum (Museo Ferroviario  - via Giulio Cesare, 1).  Open Wednesday, 
Saturday and Sunday from 9-13.
Exhibition entitled "Gli orologi di Miramare" open 9:00-18:00 every day 
in Miramare Castle until 31/1/2007, with a collection of Hapsburg 
timepieces on display in the various rooms of the Castle.
Tango is the name of the exhibition by the artist Piero Toresella 
opening on Friday 29 September and on display until 31/10/2006 at the 
Galleria Perizzi in via San Nicolo' 32.  Daily from 9-12.30 and 
15.30-19.30.
On Saturday 30 September a new photographic exhibition entitled Trieste 
e le Navi Bianche will be inaugurated in the Civico Museo del Mare in 
via di Campo Marzio, 5.  From Tuesday to Sunday until 7 January 2007 
from 8.30-13.30, you can see a collection of photographs on the history 
of cruise ships in the port of Trieste.
If you like art with a sailing theme, in conjunction with the Barcolana 
sailing regatta, various exhibitions are taking place throughout 
Trieste:
Vele e Colori di Barcola can be seen at the Circolo Marina Mercantile 
"Nazario Sauro" in viale Miramare 40 from 1 - 8 October.
At the Stazione Marittima, molo Bersaglieri is hosting Vele marine del 
nostro mare 2 each day from 8.10-12 and 15-20 from 30/9-14/10/2006.  A 
collection of paintings, sculptures and graphics, on the same theme, is 
on display in the Atelier degli Artisti in viale XX Settembre 43/b 
until 14/10/2006.
Regate nel golfo is the title of the exhibition of paintings by 
Federico Fumulo in the Bar Ferrari in via San Nicolo' until 31/10/2006.
On Sunday 1 October, from 10-13 and 15-18, and then every first Sunday 
of the month until May 2007, there will be the model train exhibition I 
trenini della domenica organized by the Club Triestino Fermodellisti 
Mitteleuropa in via dei Giardini 16 in Servola (bus 8 and 29), which 
attracts more than 2000 visitors annually.  Entrance is free.

C H I L D R E N'S  A C T I V I T I E S
L'Immaginario Scientifico
This science museum (located on the ground floor level of the Adriatico 
Hotel, entrance at the rear of the hotel, opposite the 36 bus stop) has 
exhibits which are particularly suitable for children.  They will be 
open this Sunday from 10-20.  A children's laboratory will be held on 
Sunday from 15.30-16.30 for those aged 4-7 and from 15:30-16:30 for 
8-11 year olds.  Both groups will be making soap this week.  You can

L O C A L   E V E N T S
On Sunday 8 October the Barcolana sailing regatta will take place in 
the Gulf of Trieste, with an expected 2000 boats and 25,000 sailors 
taking part.  In the run-up to the race, there will be a lot of events 
going on, particularly near the waterfront in town, where stands and 
kiosks are already being set up.  This Saturday and Sunday the 
Barcolina regatta, open to young sailors aged from 8-16, will take 
place.

Festa dei Nonni - Grandparents' Day
This weekend marks the second national 'Festa dei Nonni' (Grandparents' 
Day).  On Saturday 30 September from 15:00-18:00 in the Giardino 
Pubblico (Public Garden) in via Giulia (bus number 6) there will be a 
celebration for families with lots of games and activities organized.  
On Sunday 1 October, from 10:30 onwards there will be a  concert by the 
Arcobaleno Band followed by Umberto Lupi in piazza della Borsa in 
Trieste town centre.  There will also be vintage horse-drawn carriages 
on display.

Dog Festival
This weekend there will be the 5th annual Dog's Festival in Trieste.  
In the area around the Arco di Riccardo and piazza Barbacan on Friday, 
Saturday and Sunday, there will be an array of dogs of all breeds 
taking part in the various events organized.  There will be 
demonstrations by the police anti-drugs dogs and a variety of stands of 
interest to dog-owners, including one run by the Astad animal rescue 
charity.  On Sunday, there will be the first Dog's Marathon, a 
non-competitive walk throughout the city centre.
Also on Sunday 1 October, at 11.30 in San Bartolomeo church in Barcola 
there will be the annual animal blessing organized by Greenpeace, on 
the occasion of St. Frances of Assisi's Day.  The choir of the Galileo 
high school will sing starting at 11am.

M U S E U M S
Civico Museo Morpurgo
This Sunday 1 October, on the occasion of the 3rd National Friends of 
Museums Day, the Morpurgo Museum in via Imbriani 5, will be open from 
9-19.  Entrance is free and there will be various events taking place, 
including two concerts as well as guided tours throughout the day.  The 
Morpurgo is sited in the apartment of a wealthy 19th Century Triestine 
family and is an elegant example of a bourgeois residence, with the 
family's art collections on display.  More information on 335-5999057.

Museo dell'Antartide - Museum of the Arctic
This interesting museum has just re-opened after its summer break.  
Located in San Giovanni park, you can see reconstructions of Amundsen's 
tent and Shackleton's ship, as well as all sorts of interactive 
exhibits documenting various expeditions to the Antarctic.  Open Mon, 
Wed and Thur from 9-13 and Fri, Sat and Sun from 9-13 and 16-19, closed 
Tuesday, in via Weiss 21.  Tickets cost 5 Euro, 4 Euro for concessions

T O U R S
Trieste by Train
The "Rondo'" historical train which tours Trieste and the surrounding 
hills on the old railway lines operates each weekend until 29 October.  
Trains leave Campo Marzio station each Sunday at 9:45 and 15, and the 
main Railway station at 11:53 and 17:10.  The journey lasts about 1n 
hour and twenty minutes.  Tickets cost 8 Euro for a single, 12 Euro for 
a return.

Trieste by Bus
Every Saturday a bus leaves for a tour of Trieste from in front of the 
train station at 14.00.  It takes in all of the main sights to see 
downtown, and there is also a 30-minute stop at St. Giusto Castle, 
where you can walk along the Castle walls or visit the Cathedral or 
simply enjoy the spectacular views.  Tickets may be bought in the Sala 
Eurostar in the main railway station and cost 5.20 Euro, with children 
under 10 travelling free.
