A R T & E X H I B I T I O N S
Until 8 October you can see an exhibition which chronicles 50 years of
history of the "Piemonte Cavalleria" military regiment in Trieste.
Open every day from 9-19 in the Sala Leonardo of Palazzo Gopcevic in
via Rossini, 4.
A photographic exhibition entitled Black Flowers by Massimo Gardone is
open until 8 October in the Galleria Minimal in via San Nicolo', 25.
Open Friday and Saturday from 10-13 and 16-20.
The artistic group "Montmartre a Trieste" will be holding an exhibition
of their paintings and sculptures in piazza della Borsa on Saturday and
Sunday this weekend from 9-19. Visitors will be able to vote for their
favourite piece, and take part in a prize draw to win a painting.
Exhibition to celebrate 100 years since the opening of the historic
Transalpina railway line is open until 31 December in the railway
museum (Museo Ferroviario - via Giulio Cesare, 1). Open Wednesday,
Saturday and Sunday from 9-13.
Exhibition entitled "Gli orologi di Miramare" open 9:00-18:00 every day
in Miramare Castle until 31/1/2007, with a collection of Hapsburg
timepieces on display in the various rooms of the Castle.
Tango is the name of the exhibition by the artist Piero Toresella
opening on Friday 29 September and on display until 31/10/2006 at the
Galleria Perizzi in via San Nicolo' 32. Daily from 9-12.30 and
15.30-19.30.
A new photographic exhibition entitled Trieste e le Navi Bianche is
taking place at the Civico Museo del Mare in via di Campo Marzio, 5.
From Tuesday to Sunday until 7 January 2007 from 8.30-13.30, you can
see a collection of photographs on the history of cruise ships in the
port of Trieste.
If you like art with a sailing theme, in conjunction with the Barcolana
sailing regatta, various exhibitions are taking place throughout
Trieste:
Vele e Colori di Barcola can be seen at the Circolo Marina Mercantile
"Nazario Sauro" in viale Miramare 40 from 1 - 8 October.
At the Stazione Marittima, molo Bersaglieri is hosting Vele marine del
nostro mare 2 each day from 8.10-12 and 15-20 from 30/9-14/10/2006. A
collection of paintings, sculptures and graphics, on the same theme, is
on display in the Atelier degli Artisti in viale XX Settembre 43/b
until 14/10/2006.
Regate nel golfo is the title of the exhibition of paintings by
Federico Fumulo in the Bar Ferrari in via San Nicolo' until 31/10/2006.
L O C A L E V E N T S
The big local event this weekend is the annual sailing regatta, the
Barcolana, which always takes place on the second Sunday in October and
attracts around 2000 boats. The actual race is scheduled to start at
10:00 on Sunday 8 October. The event will be televised live on Rai3,
but if you want to see the spectacular sight for yourself then you can
get great views from the Napoleonica route (bus 2 or 4 from Piazza
Oberdan), Strada del Friuli (bus 42 or 44 from Piazza Oberdan) or even
just by taking the 36 bus and watching from the seafront at Barcola
itself. Be prepared for crowds though!
In conjunction with the Barcolana there are stalls and kiosks all along
the seafront in Trieste town centre offering all sorts of food and
drink, as well as sailing equipment and accessories.
There will be music concerts each evening in Piazza Unita'. On
Saturday 7 October at 21, Elisa will be performing. Entrance is free.
The Miela Theatre will be showing a selection of films with a sailing
theme on the evening of Friday 6 October starting at 18.30.

F A I R S & M A R K E T S
Flea Market
On Sunday 8 October, there will be a special edition of the flea market
in Trieste town centre. All sorts of antiques and bric a brac will be
on sale all day in the roads of the old town behind Piazza della Borsa
near the Roman Theatre (Teatro Romano).
Mittelciock
From Monday 9 to Thursday 12 October there will be the annual Chocolate
Fair taking place in Piazza Sant'Antonio in Trieste centre near the
Ponterosso Canal. All sorts of delicacies will be on offer to satisfy
the palates of all chocaholics.
M U S E U M S
Museo dell'Antartide - Museum of the Arctic
This interesting museum has just re-opened after its summer break.
Located in San Giovanni park, you can see reconstructions of Amundsen's
tent and Shackleton's ship, as well as all sorts of interactive
exhibits documenting various expeditions to the Antarctic. Open Mon,
Wed and Thur from 9-13 and Fri, Sat and Sun from 9-13 and 16-19, closed
Tuesday, in via Weiss 21. Tickets cost 5 Euro, 4 Euro for concessions

N A T U R E
Carsiana Botanical Garden
This is the penultimate weekend to visit the Carsiana botanical garden,
which offers visitors a beautiful selection of the typical local fauna,
to be found among the vegetation in Carso (karst) before it closes for
the winter. There will be two guided tours this Sunday 8 October at 16
and 17 entitled "Piante in Pentola", dedicated to the culinary uses of
local plants.

Orto Botanico - Botanical Garden
At the Civic Botanical Garden in via Marchesetti, 2 there is the
spectacular autumn display of over 200 varieties of sage from all over
the world in flower. Opening hours of the gardens are 9-13 from Monday
to Saturday. Entrance is 2 Euro. More information on 040-360068.
T O U R S
Trieste by Train
The "Rondo'" historical train which tours Trieste and the surrounding
hills on the old railway lines operates each weekend until 29 October.
Trains leave Campo Marzio station each Sunday at 9:45 and 15, and the
main Railway station at 11:53 and 17:10. The journey lasts about 1n
hour and twenty minutes. Tickets cost 8 Euro for a single, 12 Euro for
a return.
Trieste by Bus
Every Saturday a bus leaves for a tour of Trieste from in front of the
train station at 14.00. It takes in all of the main sights to see
downtown, and there is also a 30-minute stop at St. Giusto Castle,
where you can walk along the Castle walls or visit the Cathedral or
simply enjoy the spectacular views. Tickets may be bought in the Sala
Eurostar in the main railway station and cost 5.20 Euro, with children
under 10 travelling free.
